Most likely a hoax I guess... Seems to me to look projected.

Lot's of people coming up with wacky ideas like stray ICBMs and unusual northerns lights, but doesn't sound plausible.

This was caused by a failed 3rd stage of a Russian Bulava ICBM test.

When this occurred I happened to be in the midst of trajectory analysis for a friend's experimental rocket that had a similar exhaust spiral -- but the Russians' was on a much larger scale (and prettier, to boot)! – Adam Hollidge♦ Jan 11 at 22:06
