Anybody know what types of computers the Lunar Lander competitors have been using to control their craft? Are these things that anyone can buy off the shelf, plug in to a desktop computer, and start playing around with?

John Carmack has mentioned a Parvus PC/104 computer a few times in the news section of Armadillo's site. Not sure which model, but they usually come with all sorts of connectors and I'm sure desktop development is possible.

As for Masten, I have no idea, but I'd bet they use some kind of PC/104 style device, too.

BTW, PC/104 is a standard embedded computer form factor. Boards are stacked, vs. your everyday backplane-style system (a la most desktop computers).

In this blog entry [Sept. 2008], Masten says they're using two Diamond Prometheus PC/104 stacks, one each for their vehicle's flight management and attitude control systems. I couldn't find the Prometheus after a quick look at Diamond's web site, but I'm sure there is a similar setup still available. Maybe the Pluto?
